Depp v Heard libel trial: Johnny Depp thanks jury for 'giving him his life back' after winning lawsuit - as Amber Heard says her disappointment is 'beyond words'

After six weeks, it's all over - the jury last night found in Depp's favour.

Yesterday, the jury returned after several of hours of deliberations and ruled in favour of Johnny Depp - agreeing Amber Heard did defame him in the Washington Post article.

They decided the statement was false, defamatory and said with malice.

Depp was awarded $15m - $10m in compensatory damages and $5m in putative. The latter will be reduced to $350,000 due to statutory limits in the state of Virginia.

Heard did win one of her three defamation counter-claims against her ex-husband, after suing him over comments made by his lawyer Daily Mail. She was awarded $2m - much lower than the $100m she was seeking and lower than the $15m awarded to Depp.

In 2020, an attorney for Depp, Adam Waldman, was quoted in three separate Mail Online articles about Heard's allegations of domestic violence against Depp. 

These have been referred to as the Depp-Waldman statements and it is these Heard countersued over

Here's the moment the judge revealed the jury's verdict; that Johnny Depp had won his libel case against Amber Heard over her comments in The Washington Post.

It decided her statements were false and made with "malice".

Depp's lawyers gave a brief statement outside the court in Fairfax, Virginia, a few minutes ago.

They said Heard's claims were clearly "defamatory and not supported by any evidence" and that they were "so grateful to the jury for their careful deliberations".

They added that they were "truly honoured" to work with Depp on the case and that it was "now time to turn the page and look to the future".
