Catch-up: Johnny Depp wins defamation claim against Amber Heard

Yesterday, the jury returned after several of hours of deliberations and ruled in favour of Johnny Depp - agreeing Amber Heard did defame him in the Washington Post article.

They decided the statement was false, defamatory and said with malice.

Depp was awarded $15m - $10m in compensatory damages and $5m in putative. The latter will be reduced to $350,000 due to statutory limits in the state of Virginia.

Heard did win one of her three defamation counter-claims against her ex-husband, after suing him over comments made by his lawyer Daily Mail. She was awarded $2m - much lower than the $100m she was seeking and lower than the $15m awarded to Depp.

In 2020, an attorney for Depp, Adam Waldman, was quoted in three separate Mail Online articles about Heard's allegations of domestic violence against Depp.

Depp lawyers thank jury for 'careful deliberations'

Depp's lawyers gave a brief statement outside the court in Fairfax, Virginia, a few minutes ago.

They said Heard's claims were clearly "defamatory and not supported by any evidence" and that they were "so grateful to the jury for their careful deliberations".

They added that they were "truly honoured" to work with Depp on the case and that it was "now time to turn the page and look to the future".
